Perez To Run For President

It has been widely reported in the Spanish media over the past couple of days that Florentino Perez will announce his intention to run as a candidate in the Real Madrid presidential elections on May 14th. If this happens, then it seems almost certain he will be elected president, such is the enigma surrounding him. After the last presidential reign, presided over by Ramon Calderon who failed to secure any major signings, fans will undoubtedly be anxious to see who Perez will attempt to bring to the Bernabeu during the summer transfer window.

The arrival of Perez will undoubtedly ring wholesale changes in the Real Madrid squad, but who are the likely candidates that will be shipped out of the team and who will replace them?

Out......

Many media outlets are reporting that Perez will try to sell most of the Dutch contingent at Real Madrid to finance deals for other players. This includes Sneijder (Juventus are reportedly interested), Robben, Van der Vaart, Drenthe and Van Nistelroy. The future of Klaas Jan Huntelaar remains somewhat unclear as he only arrived in the January transfer window, and Real are unlikely to recoup the transfer fee paid if they were to sell him so soon.

Fabio Cannavaro has reportedly undergone a medical in Juventus and has agreed to sign of one-year contract with the Italian club, and it is highly unlikely Gabriel Heinze will remain at the club such has been his terrible performances over the last couple of months. Pepe is serving a 10 match suspension for violent conduct, and although he was initially quoted has having “lost the desire to play football”, it is almost certain he will continue with the team. Michel Salgado has been the subject of interest from Al-Rayyan, a Qatar based club, but has not decided if he wants to pursue this option. If he does stay at Madrid, he is unlikely to get much playing time, given his age and that his preferred position is that of right-back, a position currently occupied by Sergio Ramos. Christoph Metzelder has not had considerable playing time since joining the club and it seems almost certain he will also move on in the summer.

Question marks also remain over the future of Gago, Marcelo, Guti, Faubert (currently on-loan and certain to go back to his club), De la Red, Javi Garcia and Miguel Torres. Ruben De la Red, a product of the youth squad, has not played for Real Madrid since collapsing during a Copa del Rey match last December and is currently undergoing medical tests to determine if he can return to football. These results are to be known in the next few weeks. Javi Garcia and Miguel Torres have also been promoted from the youth team but did not get much playing time under either Schuster or Juande Ramos, leaving their involvement with the Madrid squad unclear. Despite the improved performances of Marcelo over the last couple of months, it has been reported he will be sold to make way for more high-profile players. Guti, vice-captain of Real Madrid, is unlikely to be sold (primarily because no-one will want to buy him but also because he is a long-standing member of the club) but will have to start showing some consistency and much-improved performances if he wants to be a regular starter.

In.......

There is much speculation surrounding the players that will arrive to the club if Florentino Perez is elected president. It has been reported that he will try to sign Christiano Ronaldo, Kaka, Cesc Fabregas and Xabi Alonso if successful in the elections. Although this may seem highly unlikely, he is the president that signed Beckham, Zidane and brought Figo to the Bernabeu from their arch-rivals Barcelona. Ramon Calderon has already stated that there is a deal in place for Ronaldo to join during the summer, and this story has gained credence over the last couple of days as it emerged United bit £62 million for Frank Ribery, subject to Ronaldo’s sale to Madrid. Although Kaka has repeatedly stated his desire to stay in Milan, it is widely believed Real Madrid intervened in the Manchester City bid last January, promising to bring the player to Madrid during the summer transfer months if he didn’t sign for the English club. Arsenal’s lack of silverware again this season may be the impetus for Cesc Fabregas to leave the Emirates during the summer, and Rafa Benitez may try to sell Xabi Alonso to finance a deal for other players.

The Manager......

So who will be taking the Real Madrid hot-seat come next August?? Juande Ramos was initially handed a 6-month contract as head coach, subject to renewal upon winning a trophy. But with Madrid out of the Champions League, and Barcelona only a couple of wins away from clinching the La Liga title, he did not fulfil these criteria and is unlikely to continue with his role. A number of names have been mentioned for the job including Arsene Wenger, Jose Mourinho and Carlo Ancelotti. There have been rumours over the last few months that Wenger is becoming increasingly frustrated with the lack of funds to compete at the highest level, along with some uncertainty in the boardroom, so maybe a lucrative offer from Real Madrid may lure him away from the Emirates. A major stumbling block for Wenger though would be the lack of complete control over players coming and going from the Bernabeu. Jose Mourinho, although top of the Italian league with Inter Milan, failed to secure Champions League success with the team, something which was a major priority for the Italian club, so there is the possibility he may be shown the exit door when the season ends. Mourinho has always expressed his desire to manage in La Liga someday, so maybe this could be the opportunity. Carlo Ancelotti has been repeatedly linked with a move away from AC Milan during the summer, but reports would suggest he will almost certainly take over as Chelsea boss.

There is bound to be much speculation and transfer rumours over the next few months, and it only remains to be seen who will be wearing the white of Madrid once the new season starts.
