The Galácticos Are Coming Back.....

Florentino Pérez officially announced today his intention to run in the Real Madrid presidential elections in June. It can hardly be considered a surprise announcement, given the carefully orchestrated behind-the-scenes campaign being run by his advisors over the past few months. Indeed, such is the anticipation surrounding the return of Pérez, the Madrid based media (in particular Marca) have already concluded the election result is a foregone conclusion.

Although other candidates have claimed to have managers and players in the bag (Bilic and Drogba have been mentioned), it almost seems like a pointless exercise for them to run in the elections, because Pérez is the man to beat. He is, after all, the man that brought the Galáctico era to Madrid. And that is exactly what he intends to do again.

World-class signings like Kaka had been promised by Madrid’s previous president, Ramon Calderon, but these failed to materialize; his only high-profile signing being Arjen Robben who has spent half his time at the club on the treatment table. Players like Van der Vaart, Drenthe and Sneijder may be quality players but hardly compare to signings like Zidane, Figo and Beckham. And after the disastrous Christiano Ronaldo transfer saga of last summer, fans are eagerly awaiting some big names to be installed at the Bernabeu. Numerous high-profile players have been mentioned including Kaka, Ribery, Villa and Ronaldo. If anyone can return the Galáctico era to Real Madrid it is Florentino Pérez, and it is something he intends to do.......sooner rather than later.
