Barcelona On The Brink...

Barcelona can become La Liga champions this evening if they beat Villareal at the Camp Nou, following Real Madrid’s shambolic defeat to Valencia on Saturday evening.

Last night’s 3-0 victory for Valencia gave them a major boost in their quest to finish in the Champions League places this season....on the other hand, it really consolidated the fact that Real Madrid need a major squad overhaul during the transfer window. For a team that were trying to restore some pride after their 6-2 humiliation to Barcelona last weekend, it certainly wasn’t obvious from this performance. It seemed the Real players were concentrating more on their upcoming summer holidays than on the job at hand.

Play started at a rapid pace with both teams going forward, and Iker Casillas made a world-class save after just 6 minutes when Baraja headed in a cross in from Joaquin; and only 60 seconds later he saved a David Villa effort. But the home side took the lead after 28 minutes after Mata skipped past Fabio Cannavaro and put the ball past Casillas. Only four minutes an error by Casillas allowed David Silva to put the home side 2-0 up. It was one-way traffic from there on as the Valencia players skipped past the Madrid defence, and it could easily have been 4-0 before half time.

Little changed after the break with the Madrid players unable to offer anything going forward, and Baraja ending any hope of a Madrid comeback after putting the home side 3-0 after 67 minutes.

Overall it was a shambolic performance from the Madrid players, many of whom were certainly playing for their futures at the club. On that performance, however, the sooner some of them go the better.
